Supporting Taupō: Lake Taupō Rotary's Impact
Lake Taupō Rotary pride ourselves in helping the Taupō Community through our fundraising events and projects, which enable us provide funding for community grants, scholarships and donations.
In addition to the Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge, annual events include the following:
The Across the Lake Swim event every February has been running since 1963 and attracts local swimmers as well as national and international participants. This is Taupō’s longest running Community Volunteer Event and Rotary is proud to run this iconic event.
Every year in May, Lake Taupō Rotary runs a Charity Golf Tournament. Teeing off since 2015 at Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary, this event attracts avid golfers from around the North Island and has allowed Lake Taupō Rotary to support numerous local charities through the years.
The Dropzone Fireworks and Laser Event held each November at Owen Delany Park since 1988 is also proudly run by Lake Taupō Rotary. It’s Taupō’s largest community volunteer event and it’s a fantastic event for the entire community to enjoy.
Lake Taupō Rotary also supports the community through providing use of “Rotary House” for community functions at a very reasonable venue fee. A Rotary “Community Van” is also available for community use to enable groups to travel about and take part in their activities.
Lake Taupō Rotary also engage in other community projects such as a recent revegetation at Wairakei, working with Greening Taupō to provide an extension to an existing Rotary Planting. The purpose of growing this native planted area was/is to establish a flourishing habitat for native bird life providing a flight and feeding corridor link between Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary predator free area and the Waikato River.
Supporting local youth is an important part of Lake Taupo Rotary’s mission. This year Usborne Illustrated Dictionaries were supplied to year 4 students at Tauhara Primary School, bringing books back to school for basic learning skills and four students from Taupo-nui-a-Tia College with varying abilities were sent to the Halberg Games at Kings College in Auckland where they could participate and compete in many activities. These opportunities were in addition to the support of youth through annual scholarships, the Rotary Youth Leadership Award and the Rotary Youth Exchange programme that Lake Taupō Rotary provides every year.
Lake Taupō Rotary welcome new members to join our team of dedicated and enthusiastic Rotarians to help us “make a difference” in our local, national and global community.
