Travel to Taupo
Drive to Taupo
Travel to Great Lake Taupo is easy – Taupo is an easy one hour drive from Rotorua, three and a half hours drive from Auckland and four hours from Wellington. It is centrally located in the middle of the North Island and is also within two hours drive from the Waitomo Caves, the Hawkes Bay wine region and Mount Ruapehu. If you are coming from the South Island, the Interislander is a great option for your drive to the event.
PLEASE NOTE: When arriving into Taupo from the North there is no right turn into Redoubt St from the south bound lane on Friday. Redoubt St is closed 5.30am-10am on Saturday 24th Nov.
Fly to Taupo
Most major international airlines fly direct into Auckland and Wellington, both of which are within 4 hours drive of Taupo. There are also daily connecting flights between Auckland/Wellington and Taupo.
Air New Zealand
Due to the size and compact nature of regional turboprop aircraft operating Air New Zealand services to Taupo from Auckland, all oversize items such as bicycles are carried subject to hold space availability and acceptance of any piece of oversize baggage cannot be guaranteed until the day of travel. If your bicycle is unable to be accommodated on the service you have booked, it will be sent on the next available flight with sufficient hold capacity. The item will then be held at the airport for collection at your convenience.
Alternatively, you may prefer to utilise Rotorua as your gateway for the event. Air New Zealand offers services to Rotorua from Wellington and Christchurch with larger turboprop aircraft than the equipment that operates our Taupo routes. Rotorua flights are not exempt from some restrictions relating to the carriage of oversize items however the larger capacity aircraft that operate Air New Zealand services from Wellington and Christchurch to Rotorua do facilitate the transport of a greater number of oversize items per flight than can be accommodated through Taupo. If you would like to contact Air New Zealand directly at Taupo Airport please email us.
Sounds Air operate daily flights between Wellington & Taupo. Each aircraft accommodates 9 passengers and can carry up to 3 bikes. Bikes must be in bike bags. If you are using Sounds Air to travel to the event please contact them to confirm transportation of your bike. Due to cargo limits bikes may need to be transported to Taupo earlier in the week.

100KM OF PURE 100% NEW ZEALAND Live volcanos, ski fields, country roads, and remote lakes – you won’t forget today. We will leave Taupō nice and early as we’ve booked a really nice (tiny) café for breakfast. In fact – it’s opening just for us. Our starting point for today’s ride is a town called Turangi. It’s 40km from our hotel at the southern end of the lake. Established in 1887, Tongariro National Park is New Zealand's first National Park, and the fourth National Park to be created in the world. Tongariro National Park has gained international significance by being awarded UNESCO Dual World Heritage, a status which recognises the park's important Maori cultural and spiritual associations as well as its outstanding volcanic features.
TNP has also gained much fame after the release of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The area was depicted as the Land of Mordor – with one of the mountains in the park, Mount Ngauruhoe, featured as the forbidding Mount Doom in the movies. The park is dominated by the three volcanoes of Mount Ruapehu (2797m), Mount Ngauruhoe (2291m) and Mount Tongariro (1968m).
The region has been formed by many volcanic eruptions over the last 300,000 years; as well as glaciers from the last ice age. This has created surreal colours, landscapes and textures.
Our ride is a very hilly 100km although we will have a shorter option available. We will have two vehicles supporting us on our ride. So, if you’ve had enough then simply hop in the van. We’ll stop just after 50km for lunch. That happens to be at the bottom of Whakapapa ski field where the views are unforgettable.
Depending upon time we’ll pop in to a local lake side café for a beer on the way back to Taupō. You deserve it.
