Ride for the Gut Cancer Foundation
Ride Lake Taupō and make a difference to kiwis with gut cancer. Last year, Sirpa and her husband David took part in Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge, raising over $4,500 for kiwis with gut cancer in memory of their son Sean who passed away at 31 from Cholangiocarcinoma – a rare cancer which affects the bile ducts. The Gut Cancer Foundation is so grateful to Sirpa, David and those who rode for the Gut Cancer Foundation in 2022 who raised over $16,000 for research and awareness to change outcomes for kiwis with gut cancers.
Over 6000 New Zealanders are diagnosed with a gut cancer every year. Gut cancers include oesophageal, stomach, liver, pancreatic, gallbladder, bile duct and bowel cancer. Sadly, the survival rates for this group of cancers are particularly low with over 50% of those diagnosed not surviving beyond 5 years.
To improve these outcomes, the Gut Cancer Foundation, with the support of events like Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge, fund research into ways to better detect, diagnose, and treat these cancers. We also providing awareness and education into symptoms to promote earlier detection and ways we can all reduce our risk.
