Ride for Gut Cancer
Gut Cancer Foundation are proud charity partners of Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge.
Over 6000 New Zealanders are diagnosed with a gut cancer every year. Gut cancers include oesophageal, stomach, liver, pancreatic, gallbladder, bile duct and bowel cancer. Sadly, the survival rates for this group of cancers are particularly low with over 50% of those diagnosed not surviving beyond 5 years.
To improve these outcomes, the Gut Cancer Foundation, with the support of events like Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge, fund research into ways to better detect, diagnose, and treat these cancers. We also provide awareness and education into symptoms to promote earlier detection and ways we can all reduce our risk.
Exercise is a really simple way you can reduce your risk of developing a gut cancer for several reasons:
There is strong evidence that higher levels of physical activity are linked to lower risk of several types of gut cancers including bowel, oesophageal and stomach cancer.
Bone health is important, especially after the age of 25 as our bone density starts to decrease. Exercise, even just brisk walking, increases your bone strength and helps to keep it in good shape long into later life.
The amount of exercise you get in will have a direct reflection in how you feel. This is due to endorphins, blood flow, and hormones that release when you move about. Move more and feel better.
Vitamin D! Exercise is great, especially when outside in some delicious sunlight. Just 30 minutes outdoors a day will improve your melatonin levels at night to help with your sleep AND it will even improve your gut microbiome composition, so your gut is healthier too.
