Luna has half a heart
Every year hundreds of children like Luna are diagnosed with a heart condition.
The news that a child has a heart condition is devastating for families, their lives are turned upside down in an instant as they are immediately faced with an uncertain future. There is no prevention, nor cure for a congenital heart defect (CHD), and it is the most common birth difference in the world. Each week in Aotearoa 12 babies are born with a CHD, and other previously healthy children will develop an acquired heart condition following an illness.
Heart children are often faced with weeks or months in hospital as they receive life-saving treatment at Starship Hospital in Auckland. Parents will often have to leave other children and partners at home as they care for their sick child in hospital. Families going through heart journeys are often faced with separation, isolation, stress, financial hardship and loneliness. These families need support and this is where Heart Kids NZ steps in, offering crucial practical, emotional and social support, free of charge to all those impacted by childhood heart conditions.
No family should ever face the challenges of a heart journey alone. Heart Kids NZ has a dedicated team of family support taituarā based in Starship Hospital and in communities across the country to ensure heart families will feel supported, informed and connected. Heart Kids NZ help at every step of the journey; from diagnosis, through childhood, the teenage years and into adulthood – supporting over 10,000 members nationwide.
Heart Kids NZ receives no government funding and is reliant on the generosity of kind-hearted individuals and sponsors to provide this vital support at no cost to families.
