In loving memory of Sean Joyce

Sean started cycling at age 10. He wanted to be a professional cyclist from the time he was selected for the under 17 national cycling team at 16 years old. A move to Belgium to further his career just before his 21st birthday saw him ride for several different teams over the next couple of years. His professional career was cut short with health issues leading to the diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of gut cancer in the bile ducts in the liver. After many procedures and rounds of chemo, sadly Sean passed away in March this year.

Sean worked for a bike shop, Get Fixed, in Belgium as a bike mechanic. Whilst he was undergoing treatment, the bike shop ordered a special bike frame as a gift for Sean. He never got to see it. The frame has been gifted to Sean’s Dad, David and he will be riding this special bike in this year’s event whilst raising funds & awareness to support Kiwis with gut cancers.

David will be joined by friends to complete his 30th Round the Lake, whilst his wife Sirpa and her friends will be taking on the new Length of the Lake event. They hope to co-ordinate and finish their ride in as one in memory of Sean.
