Owen Ellis is taking part in the BDO Huka Steamer event at the BDO Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge. With 15 Kiwis diagnosed with a gut cancer every day, Owen saw it as a ‘no brainer’ to do what he could to help, particularly as a close friend is battling bowel & liver cancer.

Owen says “It’s the first time I have taken part in the event and whilst it’s going to be challenging, it is nothing compared to the challenge my friend is facing with his cancer treatment. Fundraising to support those diagnosed with gut cancers is the least I can do”.

Setting up a fundraising page is easy to do and sharing it with friends, family and work contacts, Owen has already raised over $1,000.

The Gut Cancer Foundation’s goal is to raise $50,000 to support vital research needed to improve outcomes for those diagnosed. With some of the poorest survival rates of any cancers, the funds raised will help researchers to find better ways to detect, diagnose and treat cancers of the digestive system, together with raising awareness of symptoms and risk factors so people seek help sooner.
