Can you cycle to support heart kids?
Once a heart kid, always a heart kid.
With no cure for a childhood heart condition, the diagnosis of one can be devastating and the impact far-reaching; heart families can be faced with separation, isolation, stress, financial hardship, and loneliness during their journey. The future is uncertain, and these families need support.
At Heart Kids NZ we understand that more than anyone, and that is why we are here to support the entire whānau. With a specialised hospital and community family support team, we provide free, vital, practical and emotional support services where and when families need it.
Heart Kids NZ receives no government funding and relies on the generosity of kind-hearted donors to help continue providing our free support services.

Lleyton (pictured), was born with a childhood heart condition and at 6 weeks old he had his first open-heart surgery. He spent his first year of life in and out of hospital and required numerous surgeries. After he collapsed at school as a 6-year-old he had a device placed under his skin to monitor his heart at all times.
Lleyton was then diagnosed with Long QT Syndrome, a hereditary heart condition affecting the electrical side of the heart. This meant he would be on lifetime medication and have an AED in a bag that goes everywhere with him.
Lleyton is now 13 years old and has just had another open-heart surgery – his tenth. He didn’t let it hold him back and the sport-mad teen was back on his bike as soon as he had recovered.
Lleyton’s mum, Claire, said Heart Kids NZ has provided them with support, resources, advice, knowledge and connection with other families, “but most importantly hope. I remember the first Heart Kids NZ event I attended when Lleyton was this tiny little baby, blue with low oxygen saturation and an NG tube in his nose to feed him.”
