Women’s Enduro Record Broken
Completing the double lap Enduro course in the BDO Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge is a major feat on its own, but taking out the record is something else! Congratulations Georgia Perry for completing the course in an incredible 9:22:15, a time that broke the 2 Lap Enduro Women’s record.
Kicking off at 1.30am and taking on average around 13 ½ hours to complete, the double lap of the lake (including two grueling grinds up Hatepe Hill) is a total of 320km and is not for the faint-hearted.
Georgia Perry rode the Enduro event as part of a team with fellow riders, Grant Tuffery, Peter Tuck, Alex Heaney and Dan Barnett. The story was made even more epic and interesting when, 275km in, Georgia’s chain came off and threatened her chances of completing a record-breaking ride. Teammate Dan Barnett, acknowledging Georgia’s goal, did not hesitate to loan Georgia his bike. While it meant that Dan was not able to finish on the day, Georgia was able to complete the ride on the loaner bike and crossed the finish line with a record-breaking time!
Later, at prizegiving, Dan was awarded The Fred Ogle Memorial Award. This award recognises an Outstanding Good Samaritan act on the ride and Dan’s generosity more than represents the essence of this award! Although some might say (including Dan) not having to grind up Hatepe Hill for a second time that day was his real award!
