This 85km (approx) mountain bike ride is on a par in time and difficulty with the iconic 160km Round the Lake road ride around Lake Taupo. The Huka Challenge course is a mix of the Waikato River Course and the Craters MTB Park- Warakei Forest.
The Huka Challenge ride will be on mostly Grade 3 single track, with some sections of Grade 2 and Grade 4. There will be a very small amount of road to ride (maybe a kilometre) and a 2-km section of 4×4 track – sorry but we have to link up the single tracks somehow!
Expect to get an easier run to Wairakei Resort Hotel, grade 2 tracks . After Wairakei Resort Hotel it is a more technical track up to Grade 4 all the way. The tracks are all in great nick and the new tracks have packed down and are real fun.
The Huka Challenge mountain bike event is demanding and therefore suited to fit and experienced riders. If you are in doubt of this distance or your fitness we recommend that you choose the Huka Steamer or Huka Teaser Category.
Total climb for the Huka Challenge is 2347m.
