The BDO Teams Challenge is really simple to be part of. Simply register your team of four (or multiple teams of four) as wanting to take part in the BDO Teams Challenge when you do your event entry. It is free to enter the BDO Teams Challenge and we will also give you a 10% discount off your entry fee.
Your team of four need to ride in the same event category and there will be a winner for each of the below categories:
Bike Barn Round The Lake
Half The Lake
BDO Huka Challenge
BDO Huka Steamer
BDO Huka Teaser
The winning teams will be the ones with the best cummulative time of their first three riders.
You will also get a trophy and certificate to take away with you.
BDO will also put you in the draw to be one of ten teams that they host at the BDO BBQ in the event village after your ride.
Remember entries in the BDO Teams Challenge save you 10% so get your team together!
If you are a group of four or more and not taking part in the BDO Teams Challenge you can still get a 10% discount off your entry.
Simply email email@example.com to access your unique 10% discount code.
As an extra incentive if you are a group of 30 riders or more, we're also going to give you free entries into the 2020 BDO Lake Taupo Cycle Chalenge. A group of 30 will receive one free entry into the 2020 event, with an additional free entry for each multiple of 10 riders over and above that eg. a group of 40 will receive 2 free entries into the 2020 event, a group of 50 will receive 3 free entries into the 2020 event and so on.
Other Group Challenges
It’s simple to win one of these other group challenges. All you have to do is be the group that rides the greatest total distance, so a big group doing our shorter distances could have as much chance of winning as a smaller group who take on our longer course options. These challenges are:
- Schools Challenge
- Rotary Challenge
- Tertiary Challenge
And for groups of four or more you'll be eligible for the 10% entry discount (refer to the Group discount offer above).
Holden Own the Hill
Holden challenges you to Own the Hill! We are giving anyone who enters the Bike Barn Round The Lake, Half The Lake, or Quarter Lake categories a chance to enter the Holden ‘Own the Hill’ challenge.
This is an event within an event that Holden has created. We time the Riders ride up and down the Hatepe Hill- a thigh killer 2km climb toward the end of the course. Riders are asked to estimate the time they think they will take to tackle the Hatepe Hill, the rider with the closest actual time to their estimated time is the winner of the challenge.
Simply guess your ride time up Hatepe Hill - a thigh killer 2km climb toward the end of the course.
Set yourself a goal time. Give it all you’ve got. And own it!• If you’re fairly new to riding, try for 15 minutes or so.• Weekend road warrior? 10 minutes should do the trick.• Budding Tour de France riders should be hitting 7 minutes or less.
The Holden Own the Hill champion will win their very own Holden Acadia experience, a chance to get behind the wheel of a Holden Acadia for a weekend! Ts & Cs Apply*

100KM OF PURE 100% NEW ZEALAND Live volcanos, ski fields, country roads, and remote lakes – you won’t forget today. We will leave Taupō nice and early as we’ve booked a really nice (tiny) café for breakfast. In fact – it’s opening just for us. Our starting point for today’s ride is a town called Turangi. It’s 40km from our hotel at the southern end of the lake. Established in 1887, Tongariro National Park is New Zealand's first National Park, and the fourth National Park to be created in the world. Tongariro National Park has gained international significance by being awarded UNESCO Dual World Heritage, a status which recognises the park's important Maori cultural and spiritual associations as well as its outstanding volcanic features.
TNP has also gained much fame after the release of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The area was depicted as the Land of Mordor – with one of the mountains in the park, Mount Ngauruhoe, featured as the forbidding Mount Doom in the movies. The park is dominated by the three volcanoes of Mount Ruapehu (2797m), Mount Ngauruhoe (2291m) and Mount Tongariro (1968m).
The region has been formed by many volcanic eruptions over the last 300,000 years; as well as glaciers from the last ice age. This has created surreal colours, landscapes and textures.
Our ride is a very hilly 100km although we will have a shorter option available. We will have two vehicles supporting us on our ride. So, if you’ve had enough then simply hop in the van. We’ll stop just after 50km for lunch. That happens to be at the bottom of Whakapapa ski field where the views are unforgettable.
Depending upon time we’ll pop in to a local lake side café for a beer on the way back to Taupō. You deserve it.
