NZ’s largest cycling event announces new date for 2020

The BDO Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is excited to announce the date for its 2020 event, which will take place on Saturday 14 November. This follows the recent announcement that the 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship triathlon will be held in Taupo on Cycle Challenge’s traditional weekend of the last Saturday in November.

BDO Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge Event Director, Debbie Chambers says “While the decision to offer up our normal date which has sat firmly in our participants’ annual events calendar for 43 years was not taken lightly, we are fully supportive of Taupō District Council in securing this world recognised event to our special part of the world. We are excited about the opportunities that hosting the 2020 BDO Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge followed by the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships just two weeks later will bring to our district and the town of Taupo. We look forward to showcasing everything our event and Taupo has to offer kiwis from across the country, as well as international visitors from over 20 countries, at New Zealand’s largest cycling event on Saturday 14 November 2020.

Mayor David Trewavas said he was grateful the Cycle Challenge was willing to change its regular date to accommodate the IRONMAN 70.3 World Champs 2020.

“This is a great example of the community spirit the BDO Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge and our district are known for,” he said. “It’s amazing these two iconic events were able to work together to find a solution. We are looking forward to both of them shining the spotlight on our district in 2020.”

Dave Beeche, Managing Director Ironman Oceania adds “Successful events are built around great communities, and Taupo is an outstanding example of this.   The willingness of the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge to shift an event date they have held for 43 years in order to support another event for the wider benefit of Taupo, is testament to this community spirit.   We look forward to showcasing Taupo to the world over 2 great events in 2020 and thank Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge for their support of the IRONMAN 70.3 World Champs 2020”.

The 2019 BDO Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge will take place this year on Saturday 30 November with online entries opening on 1 June. Event and entry information is available at www.cyclechallenge.com
